Sabrina Vonderhaar, LMHC, IADC
An Addiction Specialist Who Understands High Achievement
As a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and addiction specialist, I've built my practice around a single, clear purpose: to provide a confidential, strategic space for professionals who are privately battling the immense pressure of their success. The same drive that fuels your career can sometimes fuel a cycle of overuse, and you don't have to navigate that contradiction alone.
My mission is simple: to help you move from a place of secret struggle to one of genuine healing and fulfillment.
My Approach: A Partnership for Practical Change
Therapy with me is an active, collaborative partnership. My approach is direct and results-oriented, grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. I'm not here to just listen; I'm here to act as your strategic guide. Together, we will identify what's not working, build practical skills to manage stress and triggers, and take decisive action toward the goals you set. You can read a detailed overview of our work together on my What To Expect page.
Why I Do This Work
I became a therapist because I believe in people's capacity for profound change. I saw too many driven, successful individuals who felt they had nowhere to turn with their struggles, that they had to maintain a facade of perfection. I was motivated to create a practical, non-judgmental space for professionals to talk about the things they can’t say anywhere else and build a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
My Credentials and Professional Commitment
I earned my Master of Arts in Forensic Mental Health Counseling and an Advanced Certification in Victimology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice. This training provides me with a unique understanding of high-stakes environments and the impact of trauma. I am a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in Iowa and an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (IADC).
I believe in giving back to the community and am an active member of the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (NAADAC), where I serve on the LGBTQIA+ committee. I'm also involved with the Iowa Association for Addiction Professionals and contribute to the boards of Mental Health America and NAMI.
Beyond the Session
When I'm not in a session, you'll find me traveling, attending live concerts, and exploring new cuisines. I also find relaxation in gaming and really value the sense of connection it provides with others. My cat, Salem, is almost always by my side and sometimes he even makes an appearance during our sessions!
